The Dog is Losing It

So our dog is losing it. We adopted him in 2002 and were told he was about four years old. He was probably more like eight, which means he's now about 16. He's still pretty spry but he's losing it. He constantly "asks" to be led in and out--within thirty seconds. It's like he forgets where he just was. His eye sight is poor, as is his hearing. He loses his way and can't find his way back to the house when he's outside at night. About six weeks ago, his legs went out and had to carried around. $500 later, he is fine and had some sort of "infection." I honestly don't know what was wrong with him. Now, he is urinating without even realizing it. He was standing next to me in our house peeing and not even realizing it. That happened twice in the last couple of days. I've been trying to keep him out more (he's an inside dog), except he barks when he's not in the house, which I'm sure my neighbors LOVE. Ugh. I'm so frustrated. Someone suggested that I get him doggy diapers, but seriously, with another baby one the way, do I need to be changing three sets of diapers?! What are my options for my poor pup?

A Pirate's Life for Me

My boys had an awesome conversation the other day. Here's how it went down.

My son Aidan (4 1/2 years) was getting dressed for the day in the family room. My little guy, Brandon, walked in and walked right up to his brother to watch him when Aidan exclaimed, "Brandon! I'm getting dressed. You need to give me some PRIVACY!"

Brandon (2 years), looked his brother square in the face and said, "Piracy?! Oh, ok!" Brandon then turned and ran into his room. He returned about 30 seconds later with a handful of pirate figures and their accessories.

Aidan was not amused.

New Year's Resolutions

Last year I had four New Year's resolutions.  In no particular order, I wanted to embrace the special moments with my kids more, eat healthier, declutter, and be a better wifey (keep the house cleaner and show my husband that I appreciate him more).  Well, I successfully accomplished one of those.  Oh the shame!

I learned to embrace the special moments with my kids more, which I am very happy about.  As I watch Aidan get bigger and bigger, I realize how quickly the time is passing.  It seems like just yesterday he was a baby in my arms and in only a few short months he'll be entering kindergarten--a new transition that I am certain will change our family's routines and lifestyle as school because our paramount concern.  With baby number three on the way, I will continue cherishing the moments with our boys.  I have started to consciously take mental pictures of the special and ordinary moments--doughnut crumbs around their smiling mouths, games of chance around the twisted tree in our front yard, and the like.  Every moment is very, very precious.

So, now I need to reflect on the other resolutions I neglected and state for the record that they are my resolutions for 2010...once again.  First, with baby on the way, I can say that I gave myself a bit of eating freedom over the holidays...too much.  And while I'm NOT going on a diet while pregnant, I think it's time to cut out three waffles or a muffin for breakfast and stick to stuff that is a bit healthier.  I need to bring my lunch to work more and reduce the amount of fast food I eat.  And along with eating better, I am going to steadfastly use my treadmill and wii to work out and drink more water to be healthier and stave off kidney stones.

When it comes to decluttering, I am actively working on that as we prepare our guest room in becoming a nursery.  I am paring down my collections and getting rid of stuff we don't need.  We plan on having a monster yard sale at the end of January and and another one toward the end of the summer.  I also need to find a way to slim down the toys this year.  It WILL happen, otherwise this house will get a lot smaller with one more body in it.  Within this same resolution, however, I need to learn that my girly collections don't define my femininity while at the same time acknowledging that just because I am in a house full of testosterone, I do not need to remove all refinement and beauty for our home in exchange for pirates, transformers, and trains.

And finally, and most importantly, I need to work even harder to show my husband how much I love him.  I try to tell him everyday, but that's just not enough.  He is so amazing and works so hard.  He does not deserve to come home to dishes in the sink or toys all over the family room floor.  And while it will be difficult taking care of a newborn when Connor arrives in April, I do need to always remember that Will was the first special guy in this family and he works very, very to make our lives amazing.  He is the absolute best husband and father!

So that's it.  And now I'm off to the kitchen to eat some breakfast...Special K and a banana.  Let's see how long that lasts.  :)
